The Schaumburg Police Department is currently accepting applications for the 33rd session of the Citizen Police Academy. Anybody 18 years of age and older who resides or works in Schaumburg are eligible to apply. Classes are held at the police station on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. The fall session starts on March 20th and runs for 10-weeks with graduation on May 22nd.

The Citizens’ Police Academy has proven to be a very popular program within our Community Policing efforts. Class members will meet and interact with many members of the police department and will be exposed to many facets of law enforcement. Each week different topics are presented covering patrol operations, investigations, traffic enforcement, support services, and training. The experience is not limited to classroom lectures alone. Class members will be given the opportunity to participate in a patrol ride-along, participate in firearms training on the range, practice mock traffic stops, and visit the 9-1-1 central dispatch center. People who attend 75% of the sessions are eligible to graduate and then join the Schaumburg Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (www.cpaaas.org).

Through the Citizens Police Academy, we hope to provide an environment that will help foster relationships between the police and community. It is our desire that the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to quality of life issues that face our community.

Applications can be obtained on the Village of Schaumburg website at www.villageofschaumburg.com.

Infant Injured At Woodfield Mall “Dropped By Easter Bunny”

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:10 PM Friday to a report of an injured infant at Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg. Rough week to be manager at Woodfield Mall. On Saturday about 11:09 a.m. paramedics responded with two ambulances for three elderly people that fell down the escalator. Fortunately only minor injuries were reported.

Today about 5:00 p.m. paramedics were called to the center court “holiday decoration” area for a report of an infant that was injured while dropped by the ‘Easter Bunny’. Witnesses reported that the bunny was sitting on a bench and lowered his or her arm, which caused a 6-month-old male infant to fall. The infant’s face hit the bench, and then the infant hit the floor face-first, according to the witnesses. The fall was a distance of about three feet. the infant was crying immediately after the fall, and did not appear to lose consciousness.

The bunny was relieved, and was helped out of the area with two assistants, apparently because it is difficult for the bunny to see in the costume. A new bunny came out in the costume. No camera rules are enforced in the area, because photos are sold by the holiday operations at Woodfield.

The infant and the family spent time in the emergency room until about 9:00 p.m. and were released. Police returned about 6:10 p.m. to the scene at Woodfield when the father of the child returned to Woodfield Mall to attempt to get a report. Police helped resolved the dispute.

The witnesses thought it was obvious that the costume hindered the Easter Bunny’s ability to see and move around. The witnesses believed there should be additional precautions to maintain safety for an infant being held by the bunny. They also believed the floor should be softer in case of a fall.

VIDEO: Firefighters overhaul roof and walls, checking for any hidden fire, immediately after stopping a house fire in windy conditions on Roslyn Court.

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:41 PM Tuesday to a report of a house in the block of 1000 Roslyn Court Schaumburg, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a house fire in the area of Rugby Place. A call initially came in from a resident in the 400 block of Alden Lane. Police immediately after dispatch reported they could see smoke in the direction of the reported fire.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes to report fire showing out the back of the house. Firefighters immediately went to work extinguishing the fire and performing searches for any possible victims.

Police went to work investigating the location of the residents to help determine whether any people were in the house. Police also blocked off Rugby Place for priority access for fire vehicles to and from the scene.

Firefighters had two hose lines on the fire, and extinguished the fire within about 20 minutes. A truck crew also cut open the roof to ventilate smoke, heat and gases from inside the house. Aggressive interior attack and exterior attack knocked the fire quickly, especially considering winds at the time of the fire were about 14 mph from the northwest — gusting from 20 mph to 24 mph.

Firefighters called for utilities and the Schaumburg building department to respond to the scene. Fire investigators were also on the scene. Heavy damage was visible at the back of the house.

No victims were found inside the house.

Quick action of Schaumburg Police Department’s midnight shift officers resulted in the arrest of Jamal Cook (male/black, 21, of 658 S. Liberty St., Elgin), who fired a gun in the parking lot of a Schaumburg night club. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved three charges including felony Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, felony Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon, and no FOID card.

At 2:19am on Saturday April 20th, Schaumburg Police responded to a large fight in the parking lot of The Snuggery at 1540 N. Roselle Road. Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics also responded to the scene of 10-15 people fighting with one person injured down on the ground. Officers learned that one subject reportedly removed a handgun from a car and fired two shots. Police reported that two people were injured battery victims, but that there were no gunshot victims.

Since the suspect had fled, officers quickly broadcast the suspect and vehicle description. An alert Schaumburg officer observed the suspect’s vehicle nearby on Golf Road near Roselle Road and initiated a high risk traffic stop. Cook was safely taken into custody and the gun was recovered. Chief of Police Ken Bouche stated, “This case is yet another example of the great work being done quietly and professionally everyday by the officers of the Schaumburg Police Department”.

Cook was presented to the Cook County Sheriff’s Dept. for a bond hearing at the Rolling Meadows 3rd District Court. A court date is not yet specified. Bail was set at $150,000. Members of the public are reminded that this arrest and complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
